Monarch Butterfly - Transparency

Pyrography and watercolor on cabinet-grade sandalwood plywood.

29 in x 48 in x 1.25 in (73.7 cm x 122 cm x 3.175 cm)

This enlarged portrait of a Monarch Butterfly has been carefully crafted at the hand of artist Alex Kuhn. The image is created through burning the wood with a soldering iron. Additionally, the artist uses burning techniques of both propane and butane torches to achieve the amazing marbled gradients. The orange and white colors are created by using watercolor paint. The final effect shows the woodgrain beneath the wings, accurately depicting the transparency of a butterflies wings.

This piece is mounted on a custom fabricated "sail-blue" painted steel frame and is prepped for hanging by cleat or wire.
