Pyrography

"The burning of wood"

The Art of

Pyrography

Pyrography, or “writing with fire”, is the technique of burning wood with heated metal or open flame for the purposes of creating a design. This method yields a large range of tones and shades within a monochromatic palette.

Using strictly pyrography, the possible colors range from the base color of the wood (tan), to the darkest gradient the wood can burn before losing structure (black). Alex however, is able to widen this range by sanding and carving sections of unburned wood which alters them to become noticeably brighter.

Watch as artist Alex Kuhn uses heated metal and flame to burn a hyper-realistic representations of Jupiter in wood.
